The first volume contains thirty studies spanning a time frame from the fourth millennium BCE to the 13th century AH / 19th century CE. Their geographic range encompasses the Arab East, the Islamic East and its Asian extensions, the Maghreb and its African and European extensions (Spain). The primary theme of the book is the horse and related activities in peace and war—its equipment, the gear of its riders, the literature composed on the subject, and its manifestations in art throughout history. It provides a sound methodological and introductory framework for understanding the history of horsemanship, tracing its origins, branches, interactions, and development across time and place.

The second volume, authored by David Alexander, presents a detailed catalogue of 219 items intended for the equestrian exhibition. Each item is assigned its own section, and these sections are arranged into seven thematic areas: the domestication of the horse and the era of the chariot; the horse in warfare; hunting, archery, and polo; horses in processions and celebrations; veterinary science and the treatment of horses; the horse in literature and mythology; and horses in the Qur’an and Hadith.
